“Click into the Hermit Kingdom”이란 제목으로 「코리아 타임스」에 총 100회에 걸쳐 연재되었던 기획기사를 모아 엮은 책. 코리아 타임스 연재 당시 영자신문 사상 최장 기간 연재라는 기록을 세우며, 기사를 기획했던 저자에게 한국언론인협회가 수여하는 ‘이 달의 기자상’을 안겨줄 만큼 큰 화제를 불러일으켰던 책이다.CD-ROM에 담긴 『조선왕조실록』을 영어로 간추려, 조선 왕조 500년 역사와 오늘날 우리 사회를 아우르는 방대한 내용이 담긴 이 책은 2년간 연재된 기사를 발췌하여 재편집한 것으로, 국내외의 외국인 독자를 대상으로 하되 현대 한국 사회의 동향에 어두운 독자들까지 염두에 두고 일정 부분 내용도 보충하였다. 당초 연재 기사에는 매회 1종 이상의 참고 도판이 수록되었으나 이 책에서는 지면 관계상 수록 종수를 제한하는 대신 역사 유적, 기물, 서책, 회화 등 에세이 주제에 적합한 관련 도판을 새롭게 선정, 배치하여 도판 자료만을 넘겨보아도 조선 시대 및 현대 한국에 대한 기본적인 이해가 가능하도록 편집됐다. 총 100회에 걸쳐 연재된 기사를 65편으로 통합 조정하고, 주제별로 묶어 5개의 장으로 구분했다. 제1장. IMF 경제 위기와 관련된 내용을 서두로 조선 시대 조정에서도 녹봉 부담이 큰 관리들에 대한 “정리해고” 문제가 논의되었다는 사실이 소개된다. 조선 시대의 형법, 대 중국 대 일본 관계, 거북선을 둘러싼 신화와 진실 등을 다룬다.제2장. 조선 시대 사람들은 외국어 공부, 중국어 공부를 어떻게 하였을까 하는 궁금증을 짚어 본다. 조선 시대의 역관 제도와 중국어 교재인 『노걸대』에 대한 조명이 시도되고, 이른바 옷 로비 사건과 유사한 조선 시대의 부정부패 스캔들, 망년회 풍속도 등에 대한 흥미로운 설명이 이어진다. 제3장. 당시의 최고 학부 성균관 유생들이 벌였던 데모, 오늘날의 비아그라 열풍을 연상케 하는 만병 통치약에 대한 당시의 관심, 조선 시대의 의료 수준, 대외 첩자 활동이 주요 임무 중의 하나였던 화원들에 대한 설명이 시도된다. 제4장. 코끼리나 낙타와 같은 희귀한 동물이 조선 사람들에게 처음 소개되었을 때의 반응은 어떠하였는가. 혜성과 같은 자연 현상은 어떻게 관찰 기록되었으며, 갑작스런 자연 재해에 당시 사람들은 어떻게 대처하였는지 등을 설명한다. 제5장. 오늘날과 마찬가지로 조선 시대에도 호화판 결혼식과 과다 혼수는 심각한 사회 문제였다. 고위 공직자들을 중심으로 섹스 스캔들이 일어나는 한편으로, 사회의 이중 잣대로 억압받던 당시의 여성상이 실감있게 소개된다.

서울 출생. 고려대학교 사학과를 졸업하고, 한국정신문화연구원에서 ‘조선 시대 역관 제도’에 관한 연구로 석사와 박사 학위를 받았다. 현재 한국학데이터베이스연구소 소장, 고려대학교 연구교수로 있으며, 다수의 저서를 발표하였다.
