Jame Baldwin(제임스 볼드윈:1841-1925)은 미국 Indiana주 Westfield에서 태어나 교사 생활을 하였고 Indiana주 교육감을 지내기도 했다. 그 후 그는 1887넌 New York의 유명한 출판사인 Harper and Brothers에 입사하여 편집일을 하였으며, 1893년에는 Amercian Book Company로 자리를 옮겨 주로 어린이 도서를 편집했다.
